NINE

She arrived at the Scythe in five minutes.

One moment I was alone, the next she faded in from the Park, behind me. Her camouflage was excellent. I didn’t sense her until she was within striking distance.

“You ready?” she asked, adjusting her holsters. “We’re going to need to move fast, once that building goes down.”

“How are you getting to the Waldorf?” I asked, glancing around. “Do you have a method of transportation?”

“Yes,” she said, still focused on the building several blocks away. “It’s called the Iker Express.”

“No one rides on the Scythe besides me.”

She stared at me and then at the Scythe.

“Today is going to be an exception,” she said, glancing at the Scythe. “I know I’m amazing, but even I can’t get to the Waldorf in under five minutes like you can on this rocket.”

She had a point.

“This vehicle has been runed by SuNaTran to only recognize me,” I said, getting on the Scythe. “If you try and ride it without me, it will be unpleasant.”

“I’m familiar with SuNaTran failsafes,” she said, jumping on the Scythe behind me. “I’m not looking to get exploded today.”

“Secure yourself,” I said, removing the detonator from my pocket. “Traffic is light and we should make good time.”

“It’s a straight shot down 5th until 50th, then you make a right,” she said, adjusting herself. “You better get your beastmobile started before you press that detonator.”

I nodded and pressed my hand against the Scythe, starting the silent Wraith engine. The Scythe shuddered for a moment and then settled into a low vibration.

“I’m aware of the Waldorf’s location,” I said, looking up into the lightening sky “Dawn is fast approaching. Are you wearing Daystrider armor?”

“Always,” she said. “The Sun Room is located in the South Tower.”

“How do we get up there?” I asked. “Elevator?”

“Only if you want to die,” she said. “We get there the same way you got off the Chrysler.”

“You’re not serious,” I said. “There has to be a more conventional method of gaining entry.”

“To access the North Tower, yes, we use the stairs,” she said. “Things get tricky to access the Sun Room, which is in the South Tower.”

“What’s the obstacle?”

“The Sun Room is designed to be accessed only during the day through a collapsible walkway between the towers,” she explained. “That walkway is currently down.”

“There must be a method of getting it to function.”

“There would be—if the Waldorf were open,” she answered. “The building’s been under construction for a few years now. The only way to access the South Tower is from the North Tower, and it’s anything but conventional now.”

“Aren’t they connected in some other way besides this walkway?”

“That would be convenient and easy,” she said with a laugh. “Haven’t you learned by now? Life is never easy or convenient. We zip line from the North Tower to the South, and hope Roze is distracted enough not to kill us on the way there.”

“This is going to be—”

“Fantastic, I know,” she said, interrupting me. “Whenever you’re ready, I’ll give you more details on the way.
